Broker Architecture

A message broker is by definition a device for the intermediation of messages between a sender and one or several receivers. The information flow does not take place in form of a point - to - point communication between the respective applications, but it uses a message broker as central controlling and monitoring instance.

Generally, modern brokers provide the following services:

    • transformation of the message format into one or several message formats
    • prioritization the message transfer
    • connection of heterogeneous systems
    • quality of service

Typically, a message broker is based upon a message oriented middle ware, which controls the basic data exchange and arranges for the assured message delivery. From a technological point of view, a message broker consists of a data transformation engine, a so called rules engine in form of a database and several connectors for the connection to the different systems.

  • the data transformation engine (DTE) arranges for the translation of the messages into the format of the receiver(s)
  • the rules engine is a repository to administer and edit rules under which the messages are processed. These rules are arranged as standard rule sets, on the basis of which the broker executes the message processing
  • the different applications are connected to the broker via the connectors
