Message Oriented Middleware (MOM)

Message Oriented Middle ware (MOM) means middle ware based on asynchronous communication, thus transfer of messages. Many formats are used for the messages, because no standard is specified. During the last years, XML has been established as preferred format in practise. This represents an advantage because of the self-explanatory structure and the use of several possibilities of transformation by XML standards like XLST. Furthermore a proprietary structured binary flat file is often used or several industry standards like SAP, IDocs or EDI formats are used.

MOM supports usually three different communication protocols:
    • Message Passing - direct communication between applications
    • Message Queueing - indirect communication via a message waiting queue
    • Publish & Subscribe - publisher provides the messages to 1-n subscribers

    types of asynchronous communication
    types of asynchronous communication

    Value of MOM:
      • loose coupling of applications
      • asynchronous communication
      • high flexibility, because of the tolerance regarding modifications of existing structures and functions
      • safe and very reliable because of the queue concept
      • no direct availability of services needed
      • at times faster communication in comparison to synchronous communication
      • increased availability of the respective systems
      • possibility of parallel processing of messages

A MOM realises as a queueing system normally in an integration platform the transportation layer and functionality based hereon (Message Broker).
