Process Engine

A process engine is a platform for the electronic execution of business processes within a service - oriented architecture.

Business process management and service - oriented architectures describe two sides of the same coin: SOA is a technical implementation style and at the same time a condition of component - based business process management; otherwise a flexible business process management should be the result of a SOA investment.

The purpose of this technical process management is to arrange for the execution of these workflows on the basis of a specification of process steps and therewith to technologically support the business process management.

The various concepts are:
    • The processes are based on individual activities. One activity is the smallest unit of execution in a process. Assigned to it are typically an operation, executing resources (people, machines), resources to be used (tools, machinery, other equipment) and a temporal interdependency (sequence, duration of execution).

    • A workflow is a process (transaction) which consists of several activities. These activities refer to parts of a business process or other organizational processes. Thereby a workflow describes the operational level in detail. This is ideally so precise that the following activity is determined by the outcome of the proceeding. The individual activities therefore depend on each other. A workflow has a defined beginning, an organized process and a defined end.

    • Technological processes and workflows are characterised by a coordinative nature, as opposed to cooperative systems in which the synchronous collaboration is encouraged more. A workflow typically consists of sequences of serial and parallel procedures. The management of these IT processes includes all tasks that must be performed concerning the modelling, specification and simulation as well as the execution and management of workflows.

A process engine is used to actively control these structured, work - sharing processes based on an ESB.
